In 2020, I started to share online my reunion story with my biological dad after a 27 year separation caused by domestic adoption as “@decolonizing_kiki,” a simple online handle name that I didn’t know would change my life forever. Because when I began to show up virtually as “@decolonizing_kiki,” I felt empowered to use my voice and share my story (my adoption story) from my point of view, which I had hid from my friends, family and peers for most of my life. Once I opened up, however,I began writing my story vigorously and persistently because the words were pouring out of me. After decades of being silenced, suppressed, and shamed, I, for the first time, had the confidence & nerve to share my story publicly from my perspective.
But, in the voice of… Kiki.
Through the voice of Kiki, I was able to liberate a part of myself that was needing to share and process what was going on. And unknowingly at the time, I created an Altar Ego* that supported my inner power, evolution and growth during a time of great transformation. Kiki is who led me to my community that is now the foundational community of the Church of Soft Power.
An “Altar Ego” is a character, identity, or aspect of Self who is wanting to be loved & liberated through creative expression.

Now, Kiki is so much a part of who I am, there is no real difference between Kiki & Kiernan. But, I have continued to grow and there are other Altar Egos, characters and aspects of myself that want to be seen, witnessed, and heard—and I wanted to do that alongside my best friends and community at Soft Power. So, we will be dedicating the first part of this year to exploring our Altar Egos with spiritual and creative practices facilitated in our Village in the Sky.
To introduce some of our Altar Egos and kickoff the season, the Soft Power team will be hosting Drag-In Frequency, a drag show dedicated to the year of the Dragon in the Chinese Zodiac and produced by
